Sheriff Dennis P. Smith

Dennis is a 1973 graduate of the
Menomonie High School. He worked for a few years at a local grocery store while attendnig classes at U.W. Stout. In November 1975 he became a reserve deputy sheriff and attended recruit school at District One Technical College. He was state certified in January 1977. In December 1979 he became a full time jailer / dispatcher and continued to fill-in on patrol as a deputy sheriff. In December 1980 he became a full time deputy sheriff. He was elected Sheriff in 2000 and took office in 2001.

During his 34 years at the sheriff’s office, he worked as a reserve deputy sheriff, a full time jailer / dispatcher, a full time deputy sheriff and as Dunn County’s Sheriff. For approximately 18 years, Dennis was in charge of the Dunn County Sheriff’s Reserves. During his time at the sheriff’s office he has gained experience and a working knowledge of all aspects of the sheriff’s office.

 While working at the sheriff’s office, he attended recruit school and many other specialized schools. He recently graduated from Northwestern University Center for Public Safety; School of Police Staff and Command.
